Officers get active shooter training

During the week of spring break, armed men dressed in tactical gear ran through the hallways of Unity High School, but there was nothing wrong.
The men were law enforcement officers training for an “active shooter” response scenario.
No open burning allowed in Savoy
The Village of Savoy is prohibiting all open fires due to the drought.
Savoy Fire Chief Mike Forrest said the ban is effective immediately and will be in effect until further notice.
The village normally allows burning of yard waste in approved containers.
Philo planning commission meeting rescheduled
A Philo planning commission meeting originally set for 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 11.
Philo committee to meet Friday
The Gymnasium and Community Building Committee for the Village of Philo will meet at 9 a.m. Friday, March 16, in the Eileen Painter Room of the R. E. Franks Meeting Center to discuss potential public uses of and building matters related to the R. E. Franks Meeting Center.

Illinois American Water has announced its 2012 Firefighter Grant Program. Through this program, the company provides financial assistance to fire and emergency organizations serving communities in it service areas.
Tolono fire department to host open house Sunday
The Tolono Fire Protection District will host an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30, at the east fire station, located at 202 E. Main St.
Both the east station and the west station, located at 202 W. Linden St., will be open for trick-or-treaters from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31.

Local law enforcement officers receive training on using bicycles to patrol community
The East Central Illinois Police Training Project, administered by the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, is sponsoring a 32-hour state-certified course to train law enforcement officers on patrolling the community using bicycles.
Savoy, Tolono firefighters to collect donations for MDA
Firefighters have been supporting local community families that are fighting muscular dystrophy for more than 55 years. Donations will stay local to the community to help provide services to families fighting neuromuscular diseases.
Savoy firefighters will conduct a boot drive Saturday, Aug. 27, and Sunday, Aug. 28, at the Wal-Mart at 505 S. Dunlap in Savoy.
Busey branch in Savoy robbed

Champaign County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a robbery at the Busey Bank in Savoy that occurred Friday morning.
Sheriff Dan Walsh said a man wearing a white mask entered the bank at 108 Arbours Drive about 9:55 a.m., displayed a handgun and demanded cash. The man was given cash and left, headed north on Woodfield Drive.
