Rockets second at first cross country meet

Unity's boys and girls cross country teams each picked up second place finishes on Tuesday at Kickapoo State Park. The teams started their season with solid performances from their young runners.

Cross Country teams have fresh outlook for 2012

The Unity cross country team is two kinds of new this year. The boys are literally new after replacing last year’s top five runners, and the girls are new in spirit — bringing everyone back from last year and adding a few talented young runners.

Seven schools down on the Valley

Everything in the Okaw Valley Conference is up in the air right now. Exactly what will happen with the conference is anyone’s guess at this point, but it is known that as many as seven teams are considering defecting and forming a new conference.

Boys second at state meet

The last half-mile of the course at Detweiller Park in Peoria takes the runners uphill. It’s not a severe angle, but after running two-and-a-half miles it certainly felt like it for Unity’s runners.

"It was terrible,” senior Scott Woodard said after the race. “My legs were starting to freeze up, but I feel like I did pretty well.”

Boys win first sectional

“I’ve never had a team that comes back week after week like these guys do,” Unity boys cross country coach Dike Stirrett said.

After winning their regional last week, the Unity boys came back on Saturday to win the first sectional championship in school history.

Unity runners are sectional bound

After outstanding performances in the Paxton regional last Saturday both Unity’s boys and girls cross country teams are moving on to the Decatur St. Teresa Sectional this Saturday.

Senior Scott Woodard had the best day of any Rockets runner, placing first overall in his race and helping the boys win the meet as a team.

Sages edge boys at OVC, girls take third

Monticello was the thorn in Unity’s side again last week, beating the Rockets’ boys by three points to win the Okaw Valley Conference meet.

Junior high girls win state meet

Unity Junior High School’s girls cross country team won the Class A state championship on Saturday in Normal.

All-State honors went to Taylor Renfroe, Heaven Davis and Nicole Bagwell, whose top 20 finishes helped the girls claim the title.

“To come from 24th [at the state meet last year] to first, I never would have guessed it,” coach Jeff Kyle said.
