Unity West teachers receive free self-defense training

Teachers at Unity West Elementary School received free training on how to disarm a gunman on Jan. 18.
Principal Janet Ellis-Nelson said she asked Newberry’s Leaders for Life Martial Arts in Champaign to put together the program after learning that the company offers training specifically targeted to school personnel. The Dec. 14 shooting of 20 children and six adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut made the training all the more relevant, she said.
