Cloyd “Doggie” Jean Jones passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at the Hawthorne Inn, Danville, at the age of 89.
There will be a private graveside service today (Friday). There will be no visitation per Cloyd’s wishes.
Cloyd was born June 12, 1922, in Hillery, the son of William Washington and Alta Ann (Hughes) Jones. He was a lifelong resident of Hillery.
Cloyd enjoyed baseball, especially the Cubs, gardening, riding his bike and visiting with his friends and neighbors. In his earlier years he was an athlete, playing baseball and basketball.
Cloyd retired as a millwright from Lauhoff Grain Company in 1984. After retirement, he and his wife spent many winters in Florida.
Cloyd married Katherine Lucille Overman on Jan. 25, 1947, in Urbana. Katherine preceded him in death on Aug. 10, 2008.
He is survived by a son, Robert J. (Sandy) Jones of Corinth, Texas; a daughter, Sharon K. (Ronald) Stevens of Urbana; one granddaughter, Kara J. (David) Cattivera of San Jose, Calif.; three grandsons, Scott A. (Cindy) Stevens of Crawfordsville, Ind., Douglas (Michelle) Stevens of Tolono and Michael (Debi) Stevens of Coal Valley; four great-grandchildren, Spencer (Kristie) Stevens of Brownsburg, Ind., Chase Stevens of Crawfordsville, Ind., Derek and Erin Stevens of Tolono; five step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter, Karsyn Stevens of Brownsburg, Ind.; and two step-great-great-granddaughters.
Cloyd served in the Army Air Corps with the 80th Fighter Squadron P-38 Headhunters during World War II as a P-38 mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Vera Beddow, Martha Nolan, Edith Alverson and LaVerne Mendenhall; and two brothers, Claude Jones and Clyde Jones.
