Phyllis Duff

Phyllis Duff, 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband, Frank; their children, Cathy Berrahou (Rochester Hills, Mich.), Betsy (Mark) Strong (Bolingbrook), and Brian Duff (Houston, Texas); six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Other surviving relatives include brothers James W. Stephenson (Chalfont, Pa.) and William C. Stephenson (Cincinnati, Ohio).
Phyllis was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. In addition to spending time with family and friends, she also loved to read.
She had a wonderful sense of humor, a joyful spirit and a smile that would light up any room.
Phyllis married Franklin Duff from Covington, Ky., on April 14, 1954, in Cincinnati, Ohio. After short periods of time living in Ohio and New York, Frank and Phyllis settled in Champaign in 1964. Since 2012, they have enjoyed residing at the Windsor of Savoy.
Phyllis obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Miami University of Ohio in Oxford, and a Master of Education degree from the University of Illinois.
She briefly taught school in Cincinnati, and later taught for 22 years in Champaign Unit 4 Schools. Eighteen of those years were spent at Bottenfield Elementary School until she retired in 1990.
Phyllis had a great affection for her students, and for many years after retirement she was often recognized and approached by former students or their parents.
In retirement, Phyllis and Frank enjoyed traveling both in the States and abroad. They attended over 25 elder hostels across the U.S.
No matter where Phyllis went, she brought joy to everyone she met, and she will be greatly missed.
A memorial service to celebrate Phyllis’ life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Faith United Methodist Church, 1719 S. Prospect Ave., Champaign, with the Rev. Dr. Sheryl Palmer officiating.
