Wheeler selected for IBCA All-Star game

May 2018 Unity High School graduate J.T. Wheeler has been chosen to play in the Illinos Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Games this Saturday at Pontiac High School. Wheeler will play for the Class 3A/4A South All-Stars against the 3A/4A North All-Stars at 6:00 PM, capping off a day featuring some of the finest graduating seniors in Illinois boys’ and girls’ high school basketball.

Joining Wheeler on the Class 3A/4A South All-Star team are Cardell McGee of Springfield Lanphier, Darius Beane of Carbondale, Isaiah Bowers of Lincoln, Malik Hardman of Crete-Monee, Jalen Hodge of O’Fallon, Core Noe of Mahomet-Seymour, Randy Tucker of Rock Island, Kani Acree of Carbondale, Justin Saddoris of Marion, Daylon Davis-Williams of Danville, A’Kieon Gill of Champaign Central, Jonah Smith of Mt. Zion, Adrian Ware of Washington and Noah Benedict of Mahomet-Seymour. Outgoing M-S coach Chad Benedict, who recently resigned as coach of the Bulldogs, will coach the 3A/4A South squad, assisted by Ryan Martin, also of Mahomet-Seymour.

During his senior season at Unity, Wheeler scored 359 points, averaging 18.9 points pergame. A four-year starter for the Rockets, Wheeler finished his prep career with 1,450 points in 94 games for an average of 15.4 points per contest. Wheeler ended as the third-leading scorer in Unity High School history, and was a First-Team selection on both the Illini Prairie Conference All-Conference Team, and the News-Gazette’s All-Area Team, and was a Special Mention pick on the IBCA All-State Team.

The Class 3A/4A Boys’ All-Star Game is the conclusion of a day-long marathon of all-star games at Pontiac. The Class 1A/2A South girls will play the 1A/2A North girls at 12 noon, followed by the 3A/4A South versus the 3A/4A North girls at 2:00 PM. In the 4:00 PM contest, the Class 1A/2A South boys will take on the 1A/2A North boys, with the Class 3A/4A boys game against the 3A/4A North boys wrapping up the All-Star event at 6:00 PM. Admission will be $5.00, and will be good for all four games.
