Migut named Athlete of the Year on All-Area boys’ track team

The honors keep rolling in for Steven Migut. The May graduate of Unity High School and All-State quarterback in football added another accolade to his collection when he was named the Athlete of the Year on the All-Area boys’ track and field team, selected by the News-Gazette.

Migut becomes the first Rocket to be chosen Athlete of the Year in boys’ track in the 14 years the newspaper has been designating an All-Area team in the sport.

The Class 2A state champion in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles this season, Migut was also the runner-up in the 110-meter high hurdles and ran a leg on the 4x100-meter relay team, which placed ninth at the state meet held May 25 and 26 in Charleston.

The multi-sport athlete also qualified for state in the 200-meter dash. In the preliminaries, Migut was clocked at 38.51 seconds, the fastest time recorded in the prelims. In the 110 high hurdles, Migut’s time in the prelims was 14.66, good for third in his heat, and sixth best overall. The 4x100 relay team of Dawson Kaiser, David Martin, Jackson Schweighart and Migut was timed at 43.15 in the preliminaries and finished third in their heat and ninth overall, just making it into the finals.

In the 200, Migut’s time of 23.56 seconds placed him fifth in his heat and did not qualify him for the finals.

In Saturday’s finals, the Rockets finished ninth in the 4x100 relay with a time of 1:40.00.

In the 110 high hurdles, Migut placed second with a time of 14.19 seconds and won the 300 hurdles in dramatic fashion, overcoming an early stumble to win his first state championship with a time of 38.20.

During the 2018 season, Migut established three new school records, breaking marks in the 200 (22.19) and both hurdles races (14.19 in the high hurdles and 38.18 in the intermediates.) Migut will also head to the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., with his name in the record books as a member of three relay teams. In 2015, Migut ran legs on both the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay teams that set school records en route to the Class 1A state championship, as well as the 4x400 relay quartet that set a new school mark during the Rockets’ run to a fourth-place finish at the Class 2A state meet.

Joining Migut on the News-Gazette’s All-Area Team were seniors Jonathan Decker and Dawson Kaiser and junior Quinn Shannon. Decker and Kaiser were selected for the Second Team, while Shannon was an Honorable Mention choice. Decker qualified for the state meet in the high jump and finished seventh after clearing 6 feet, 4 inches in the finals. Kaiser made it to state in the 100 meters, where he ran an 11.15 in the prelims and was also a member of the 4x100 relay squad that placed ninth. Shannon also advanced to state in the pole vault, where he cleared 13 feet in the preliminaries and missed qualifying for the finals.
