Three from Unity make All-Star team at EIU camp

At the Eastern Illinois University soccer camp in June, Unity players shined.

Out of 70 high school players from all over the region at the summer camp, Unity usually sends 8 to 12 players, said EIU soccer coach Ricardo Lara.  “The  camp is very competitive. Individuals show up from up to three hours away.”

During the week of camp, the staff puts five teams together.  Coaches from all over the state, including from Northern Illinois University, St. Xavier in Chicago, Illinois at Springfield and Millikin, watch the players and evaluate their performances, said Lara.  At the end of the camp, they select 15 players to be on the All-Star team. “Each staff member picks someone who stood out,” he said.

At this year’s camp from June 24-28, three Unity players made the All-Stars.  Micah Freeman, Evan Bachert, and Nate Reitmeier were all chosen for their outstanding performances to represent the campers in a match against the staff members.

“It’s a huge honor to be chosen for the All-Star team.  The players are chosen not only for their abilities but also their demeanor in practice and outstanding character.  We know the Unity kids well, they have been coming to the camp since they were freshman,” said Lara.  “We know them as people.  These are great kids.”
