Wheeler to attend Olney Central College

The third all-time leading scorer in Unity High School history has made his decision as to where he will continue his academic and athletic careers. J.T. Wheeler, a May, 2018 Unity graduate, announced on Twitter Sunday that he will be attending Olney Central College this fall.

A four-year starter for the Rockets, Wheeler concluded his high school career with a total of 1,450 points in 94 games, an average of 15.4 points per contest. During his senior year,

Wheeler totaled 359 points, despite missing several games late in the season due to an ankle injury.

Among his post-season awards this year, Wheeler was a First Team All-Illini Prairie Conference selection, a First Team All-Area pick by the News-Gazette, and a Special Mention Class 3A/4A All-State choice by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. Wheeler played in the Parkland College/News-Gazette All-Star Game, as well as the IBCA’s All-Star Game as a member of the Class 3A/4A South team.

Olney Central College is a National Junior College Athletic Association Division I school, and is a part of the Illinois Eastern Community College System. The Blue Knights are members of the Great Rivers Athletic Conference, along with John A. Logan College in Carterville, Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Lake Land College in Mattoon, Lincoln Trail College in Robinson, Rend Lake College in Ina, Shawnee College in Ullin, Southeastern Illinois College in Harrisburg, Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, and Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel.

The Blue Knights’ basketball program is under the direction of Mike Burris, who completed his 14th season as head coach, as well as his 18th year as a member of the Olney Central coaching staff. 

OCC finished the 2017-18 season with a 21-10 record, breaking a streak of three consecutive campaigns with sub-.500 records.

In GRAC play, the Blue Knights compiled an 11-7 mark. Burris lost three sophomores, including Erikas Jakstys, the team’s second leading scorer, who averaged 14.9 points per game. The Blue Knights averaged 87.8 points per game during the 2017-18 season.

OCC is scheduled to play in a jamboree at Danville Area Community College on Sunday, October 7, and will visit Lake Land College on Tuesday, November 20 during the 2018-19 season.
